The Mauritanian - Movie Review

The Mauritanian - Movie Review Critics Score - 8 of 10 General Audience Score - 8 of 10 In the aftermath of 9/11, the general population of the United States was in a state of shock, anger, disbelief, outrage, pain amongst a myriad of other feelings and emotions. But as the world continued to turn and life got back to normal for many citizens in the years to follow, the U.S. government was hard at work to make those responsible for said crimes pay. One of my favorite films of the last decade, Zero Dark Thirty, glorifies these efforts. The Mauritanian on the other hand, shows how those same efforts to hold those responsible to account left a wide wake that rippled into the lives of countless human beings. To think that people that had little or nothing to do with that fateful September day had their lives upended, to understand that most of us will never really know the full scope, how many or how much they suffered, it's truly a stain on our democracy for all time. This film, based

The Killing Of Two Lovers - Movie Review

The Killing Of Two Lovers - Movie Review Critics Score - 8 of 10 General Audience Score - 7 of 10 The Killing Of Two Lovers is a tense drama/thriller that really isn’t getting the attention it deserves. At 1 hour and 24 minutes, this movie keeps up a great pace and tension for the duration of the film. You’d be hard pressed to find a better cinematic experience among the new releases available. PROS - With the institution of marriage under attack from the stressful lifestyle of our modern world, divorce rates are sky high with over half of all marriages ending. The ramifications of these broken homes spirals down into the disruption of the lives of any children as well as family and friends of the couple. The Killing Of Two Lovers throws us headfirst into the middle of such a chaotic incident. The acting is terrific, the score is inventive and compelling, and it also has some nice visual styling. But where the movie is at it’s best is in the tension it creates. The tension is as tight

The Woman In The Window - Movie Review

The Woman In The Window - Movie Review Critics Score - 5 of 10 General Audience Score - 6 of 10 Is The Woman In The Window really the worst movie of the year as many people are claiming and deserving of the terrible scores and ratings that critics are flogging it with? Maybe . . . but perhaps not. There's good and bad in just about every film, and this latest offering from Netflix has a decent amount of both. PROS & CONS - In this day and age, so many people are dealing with myriads of mental and emotional problems, from traumas and depression to anxiety and high levels of stress to name a few. And with the complications of Covid-19 keeping many people indoors, many of these problems as a society have just become exacerbated. The Woman In The Window plays with many of the fears, sadnesses and paranoia that people have been experiencing over the course of the pandemic. The film doesn’t do this in a way that’s very successful but it does enough with the premise that it isn’t a fa

The New Mutants - Movie Review

Image
The New Mutants - Movie Review Critics Score - 6 of 10 General Audience Score - 8 of 10 A new batch of mutants was supposed to land in theatres last summer but Covid had different plans and this movie went almost completely under the radar for many people. If you’re just now thinking of catching up with it, will it be worth your time? PROS - What if the world of mutants and X-Men was real? What kinds of scenarios would play out as children became of age and started developing powers and abilities? The New Mutants is an inventive, outside the box take on kids growing up in such a universe. While the film has no direct character ties to the X-Men universe, there are references to them once or twice during the film. But along with some originality, these mutants have some things going for them that make it worth going back to catch up with it. The movie starts off with a bang as Dani (Blu Hunt) tries to escape from an unknown terror that threatens her Indian community. She then wakes in a

Shiva Baby - Movie Review

Shiva Baby - Movie Review Critic Score - 7 of 10 General Audience Score - 7 of 10 Shiva Baby is another fabulous writing and directorial debut by a young female, Emma Seligman. This film’s primary objective is to make you squirm, much in the same way as a comedy like Eighth Grade does or a more serious film like The Gift (2015). The cringing will have you tense like someone is dragging their nails across a blackboard for an hour and 20 minutes. Does that mean you'll have a good time? PROS - Shiva Baby introduces us to Danielle, a young Jewish woman acted by Rachel Sennott, who among a group of very talented actors, is doing some really good work. When some serious crap starts hitting the fan while attending a shiva, a Jewish funeral of sorts, the facial expressions Danielle uses, glances, looks of desperation and utter shock and horror bring the experiences to life. The uncomfortable situations the movie presents are undone regularly by the dark comedy the film is aiming for, which

Greenland - Movie Review

Image
Greenland - Movie Review Critics Score - 6 of 10 General Audience Score - 8 of 10 Any fans of disaster movies here? *Raises hand* If you’re like me, I used to love me some good old apocalyptic, disaster, end of the world in total destruction movies. From Knowing to Day After Tomorrow, Dante’s Peak to Geostorm, Twister to 2102, I was down for them all. How does Greenland compare to the rest under the view of a hopefully more critical eye? PROS - Greenland is a disaster movie that puts John, a structural engineer from Atlanta, played by Butler, in a race to safety as an asteroid plummets toward the earth. The movie keeps up a good pace through the duration of the film, going from one action sequence into another in relative quick succession. John is trying to rectify things with his wife when things turn south and the asteroid starts changing course to come into contact with our planet. Not to spoil anything for anyone, but there’s some explosions and destruction with special effects whi
