Dicks: The Musical - Movie Review

Dicks: The Musical - Movie Review Critics Score - 8 of 10 General Audience Score - 7 of 10 When it comes to movie genres, the musical has got to be one of the trickiest to pull off, at least with much success. The art of combining music, signing, dancing, choreography and lyrics into a narrative feature film in a way that flows naturally within the context of the movie is a skill that very few possess. And whether the songs and dances are even any good is another matter entirely. The new musical comedy from A24 called Dicks: The Musical is a spectacular success of ridiculous raunchiness and plays out like the most twisted version of The Parent Trap you can imagine. I kid you not when I say this is not only the funniest damn film of the year, but there’s a couple scenes that hit so hard I’m surprised I didn’t give myself a hernia from laughing so much. While a few of the jokes are specially tailored for the arthouse and cinephile audiences, there’s plenty of crude and uncouth, Family Gu

All Of Us Strangers - Movie Review

All Of Us Strangers - Movie Review Critics Score - 8 of 10 General Audience Score - 7 of 10 When it comes to gay and queer representation on film, you’ll find the opinions vary wildly on who should be allowed to represent these characters on the screen. While some advocates for the LGBTQ community insist that they need to hire only openly queer actors and actresses for these roles, others are more open to seeing straight performers embody the characters. Whatever your position or thoughts are on this issue, a new film from Andrew Haigh called All Of Us Strangers will be headed to theatres next month from Searchlight Pictures and is bound to get people talking. The two lead stars of the film are Andrew Scott, who is gay, and Paul Mescal, who is not. Whatever your stand is on the debate of representation, what is not up for debate is the fantastic chemistry between these two. As the film explores the relationship between the two men, as well as the themes of homosexuality and loneliness,

Poor Things - Movie Review

Poor Things - Movie Review Critics Score - 8 of 10 General Audience Score - 8 of 10 Searchlight Pictures is a movie studio that regularly acquires films of a caliber that frequently go the distance in terms of the Oscar race, especially the Best Picture category. For a studio that doesn’t have a massive archive of films to it’s name, it’s ability to select quality films like Best Picture winners and nominees like Slumdog Millionaire, The Shape Of Water, Jojo Rabbit and Black Swan, it’s almost unparalleled in the industry. This year the studio brings us Poor Things, the brand new film from the mind of Yorgos Lanthimos, the man who brought us The Lobster and Killing Of A Sacred Deer. While Lanthimos has been an eclectic filmmaker with unique visions and sometimes downright weird ideas, the filmmaker struck a nerve with the Academy with his previous film, The Favourite. This trend is likely to continue this year as his latest film is wildly funny and stunning to behold, albeit completely

The Killer - Movie Review

Image
The Killer - Movie Review Critics Score - 7 of 10 General Audience Score - 8 of 10 When it comes to the director David Fincher, his reputation supersedes him. The man has created some undeniably great films, a few of which the general consensus would esteem to be masterpieces including, but not limited to, Zodiac, The Social Network and Se7ev. So when we got news that Netflix was going to get Fincher’s latest project called The Killer starring Michael Fassbender, expectations immediately were through the roof. Well, it has finally arrived, on Nov. 10th we got to sink our teeth into this latest film, but did expectations live up to the hype? This is a much simpler film than many of the directors others, but like the assassin character that Fassbender plays in the film, it is nonetheless focused, methodical and calculated. Fincher’s precision has not lost a step at any point, he creates exactly the films he intends to. But The Killer’s cold calculations, while interesting and fascinating

Priscilla - Movie Review

Priscilla - Movie Review Critics Score - 8 General Audience Score - 8 Lana Del Rey has a song simply titled “Love”, in which she speaks about what it’s like growing up, getting dressed up and going out on dates, falling head over heels and as she says, “when you’re young, and in love”. It’s such a relatable sentiment but sadly, the inexperience of being that age and handling those feelings for the first time often leads to missteps, misjudgments and decisions that more often than not, do not result in happily ever after. That young love sentiment is perfectly encapsulated, and a lot of Lana Del Rey vibes in general, in the new A24 film Priscilla, a film that walks us through the fascinating early life of Priscilla Presley and her courtship to Elvis. Sofia Coppola artfully directs this nostalgic look into a time when society in general was more respectable and the expectation was that young men should have honorable intentions towards women. We watch these two starry eyed lovers gaze at
