Barb And Star Go To Vista Del Mar - Movie Review

Barb And Star Go To Vista Del Mar - Movie Review Critics Score - 7 of 10 General Audience Score - 6 of 10 Saturday Night Live has served as the launching pad for comedians to break into the world of film since it's inception in the mid-1970's. Many an actor invited to join the SNL cast has eventually made the transition and become a full fledged movie star, with many of the skits performed on the show being turned into full length feature films. Barb And Star Go To Vista Del Mar, hereafter referred to as Barb and Star, is one of the latest films from the post SNL crowd that feels like it must’ve been a draft for a skit that some producer got pitched while drunk at a bar one night and exclaimed, “That could make a whole movie!”, before slobbering down another martini. This film is one of the most outrageously wacky movies to be released on humankind in quite some time. No doubt I’ll have to Google synonyms for wacky and crazy through the rest of this review. But this film will b

Werewolves Within - Movie Review

Werewolves Within - Movie Review Critics Score - 7 of 10 General Audience Score - 7 of 10 Monsters have inhabited films pretty much since since the beginning of cinema, the imaginations of masses have been captivated by the wonder, mystery and of course fear of unknown creatures. And long before any filmmaking had ever been dreamt of, mythical creatures and monsters of all shapes and sizes have been part of the human experience probably since the first humans went out walking at night and heard some rustling in the bushes. Werewolves Within takes the age old myths about wolf-humanoid creatures and combines it with the humorous comedy of a whodunit. It plays out narratively almost like a Knives Out and The Thing hybrid, oh and throw in some werewolves just to spice things up a bit. While the film neither leaves you rolling on the floor with laughter or scares the doodie out if you, it is quite moody and consistently amusing through it’s quick hour and a half runtime. It does enough thin

Black Widow - Movie Review

Black Widow - Movie Review Critics Score - 4 of 10 General Audience Score - 7 of 10 When it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they hit their stride with the first Avenger film and have put out some really impressive work culminating in Infinity War and Endgame. Don’t believe me to be a Marvel hater, I would rate Infinity War as a 10 personally, it’s one of my favorite films of the last decade. But we’ve entered into Marvel’s Phase 4, with Black Widow being the newest film to continue the MCU, even though it’s technically a pre-Infinity War film. There’s enough to the film that general audiences and Marvel fanboys will be entertained, but it’s light on humor and too conventional in it’s story for it to really satisfy. Unlike the fantastically amusing Thor Ragnarok, Black Widow takes zero chances creatively, has subpar performances with one exception and fails to connect emotionally with the audience. While it may reach some audiences with it’s action and Scarlett strutting in her

Coda - Movie Review

Coda - Movie Review Critics Score - 8 of 10 General Audience Score - 8 of 10 People with disabilities and handicapped individuals as portrayed in cinema has become a hot button issue in recent years, with movie studios taking extra care to not offend, make fun of or demean any minority or impaired group. With last year’s Sound Of Metal tackling the topic of hearing loss with such gravity and seriousness, it’s a tightrope walk for a studio to take on a film that deals with the deaf community that’s lighthearted and humorous. But Apple Plus just dropped the new film Coda, a term used for a child raised by a deaf person, and taking the deaf and hard of hearing community in an at times lighthearted and amusing way is exactly what it does. While the film treats these issues in a delicate way, it doesn’t shy away from the humor that can result from a daughter that can hear with a deaf brother and deaf parents, the results being fantastically funny and constantly amusing. Give this warm famil

Nine Days - Movie Review

Nine Days - Movie Review Critics Score - 8 of 10 General Audience Score - 5 of 10 The concept of an afterlife is one that has both puzzled and enthralled, tortured and inspired, filled with wonder and with dread. The life beyond, if such a thing exists, is surely the one thing that mankind as a whole would choose to have the curtains pulled back and have all the secrets and mysteries of the beyond unlocked, if indeed any lock even exists. Nine days, the new film from Sony Pictures, tries to tackle, not so much life after we’re done on earth, but existence before earth and in general. This film is aimed straight at cinephiles and will reward anyone who is willing to take the time to sit down and soak up all the existential questions this film raises and picks apart. But for some in the mainstream audience, this movie will frustrate and annoy, a few in many cinemas will be reaching for their phones halfway through and getting the rest of the audience upset with them. But for those that h

Pig - Movie Review

Pig - Movie Review Critics Score - 8 of 10 General Audience Score - 6 of 10 Nicholas Cage has never been know as a top notch hardcore actor who’s performances accrue much critical acclaim and awards buzz. He’s certainly had his share of very good movie roles and has filled some of them admirably, but he’s mainly stayed a cheesy action flick guy with a few romance films thrown in and skewed more recently towards the quirky horror genre. In trots Pig, Cage’s latest work and he turns in one of the best performances he’s given in the last couple decades. This probably won’t get an Academy Awards nomination, but it’s a great piece of work from him, comprable to what Ben Affleck just accomplished in The Way Back. Although Pig is a solid movie with an interesting story and Cage’s character is fascinating to watch onscreen, it certainly isn’t for everyone. This movie won’t blow away mainstream audiences by any means, but you might just be shocked at how effectively Cage is able to pull off thi

The Green Knight - Movie Review

The Green Knight - Movie Review Critics Score - 9 of 10 General Audience Score - 7 of 10 King Arthur and the knights of the round table story has been done so many times it’s tough to imagine a new take would be revolutionary, not just for the Arthur story but for any medieval or renaissance era film. But The Green Knight is an epic tale, both in a filmmaking sense with it’s spectacle and visual wonder, but also in it’s story with ingenuity and a craftsmanship behind every single element the film is using. All cinephiles should make the effort to go into The Green Knight with as little information as possible. Through the duration of my review I’ll strive to remain as vague as possible to entice readers to view the film while simultaneously not spoiling many plot points. I’ll forgive anyone who stops reading here. Just know this is a movie created for people who love art and great cinema, but mainstream audiences will also be highly entertained in the same way as a Pans Labyrinth is co
