No Bears - Movie Review

No Bears - Movie Review Critics Score - 7 of 10 General Audience Score - 3 of 10 There are certain countries that year after year manage to produce fantastic films, the artists and voices that arise from them continually impress film pundits around the globe. Those countries include many that would normally be associated with art, such as Italy, France and England, but there are also films coming from so many other places, such as South Korea, Mexico, Israel and Iran. Iran in particular has many fantastic filmmakers working today, but the government there sometimes conflicts with the free voices that artists typically have and the ruling powers can cause problems for the filmmakers. The writer/director Jafar Panahi is one such voice who’s latest film No Bears is a fascinating look at this dynamic as in December 2010 he was sentenced to six years in prison and banned from making movies, writing screenplays and the like for twenty years. No Bears is an intriguing piece of cinema as he tr...

The Fabelmans - Movie Review

The Fabelmans - Movie Review Critics Score - 7 of 10 General Audience Score - 7 of 10 Steven Spielberg is arguably the greatest director of our generation, and possibly all time. While his backstory is mostly available for any of his hardcore fans, most general audiences and even some cinephiles are unfamiliar with his childhood and how he got his start into movies. In steps The Fabelmans, the latest film from the acclaimed director, it takes us on a journey into his younger days, we meet his parents, see what his teenage years were like and find out how his flair for directing cinema got it’s start. While he is without a doubt, a fascinating figure, some of the aspects of the film are a bit droll, the casual interest the film is able to generate is sufficient to keep audiences awake, but not on the edge of our seats. But the third act really kicks the film into high gear as it takes on Steven’s high school days and plays out like one of the great 1980’s teenage screwball comedies, wit...

My Top 10 Films Of 2022

My Top 10 Films Of 2022 #1 - After Yang Critics Score - 9 of 10 This story of an interracial family in this alternate version of humankind’s future that feels almost as real as the world outside our front door is as delicate as it is emotionally heavy hitting. The direction of Kogonada is superb as the film weaves the story of Yang, a technosapien (the name given to the human-like robots), and how he begins to malfunction under the care of owner Jake played by Colin Farrell. The film delves into the topics of memory, our existence as humans and life and death amongst many others and left me in utter awe by the conclusion. After Yang is a film for the ages and I wouldn’t be surprised at all if after a few more years and viewings I increase my score to a perfect 10 out of 10. #2 - Close Critics Score - 9 of 10 The film Close by Lukas Dhont was as surprising to me as it was devastating. Watching this at a film festival in late October, I left the theatre in tears and took a walk around th...

Till - Movie Review

Till - Movie Review Critics Score - 9 of 10 General Audience Score - 8 of 10 The tragic story of Mamie Till and her fourteen year old son Emmet are things that most young American children are taught about in high school, at least at some point. Their story is powerful, heartbreaking and blindingly infuriating. Maybe I was absent or wasn’t paying attention on the day we covered these events in history class, or perhaps I’ve just forgotten, but as I watched the new movie Till, I was absolutely astounded at the tragic events as they unfolded. The harrowing portrayal of a fourteen year old boy traveling from Chicago to Mississippi to visit family in 1955, only to cat call a twenty-one year old white woman which provoked members of her family to kidnap and lynch the young child. Till follows the tragedy and subsequent events from the perspective of Mamie played by the amazing Danielle Deadwyler, she made my top five favorite performances by an Actress of 2022. Given the current state of af...
