Babyteeth - Movie Review

Critic Score - 9 of 10

General Audience Score - 8 of 10

Babyteeth is a fantastic, if not incredibly under the radar movie that is exteremly moving and emotionally deep. This film is simply among the finest of the year and it is such a shame that nobody is talking about it and making it a point to watch it.

PROS - This movie is really one of the more complete packages as far as film and storytelling goes. The character work in this movie is truly impeccable, we can relate to these people, even if we're not suffering their same fate. The story is simple enough and not entirely spelled out but engaging enough to keep us going even if the dialogue isn't first class. An extremely well rounded story and character arcs and without any spoilers, the powerhouse ending is among the years best. Without the A list celebrities front lining this film, it's easy enough to see why more people haven't made the leap to watch this film, I myself only watched it after owning it for 3 months! But it's certainly worth your time.

The acting is very good even if it isn't perfect. It's certainly not at the level of say The Sound Of Metal or Pieces Of A Woman, but the movie surpasses those in that the story is coherent and some of the problems with the overall plot don’t keep pulling you out of it. All the key components, writing, acting and direction are at such a high level that the story is able to really deliver in the end. It leaves the viewer with a new viewpoint and appreciation for somebody going through a situation that hopefully nobody reading this will ever have to endure. But it opens up one's mind, if they're willing, and engages at a very deep level.

CONS - I found very little at fault with this film, the dialogue isn't always riveting and the story pretty basic. This movie doesn't really do anything perfect but it's all working together very well and makes a strong case for being among the best of the year. The camerawork and cinematography is fairly basic and with the exception of a few intriguing sequences never really wows. Same thing with the music and score, it's decent but never really memorable.

SUMMARY - Do yourself a favor and give Babyteeth a try, it's so much more than another good movie. It's not cinematic perfection, but it's truly a fantastic piece of film and you'll be hard pressed to find better movies this year to sink your babyteeth into.
