Promising Young Woman is a film that will captivate audiences of all kinds. This movie is doing so much and so little at the same time. Our main character isn't doing anything extraordinary, in fact, she's never seen doing anything that many would label as extreme through the first two acts. But the acts our protagonist does do are very specific, they are like pieces of a puzzle that we're working through and putting together as we collect them. The pacing is very good, even if it does lag for a brief moment here and there. But this screenplay and story are top notch with some good, if not great, dialogue to keep us in the moment with her.

But the movie is very hard to get a good read on, as soon as you think it's heading in a certain direction, you can be assured a great plot twist is about to smack you in the face. The overall story is really fairly simple once you understand it, but it's executed to perfection. It falls just short of being in the realm of truly epic movies in the vein of Parasite or Mad Max, but it isn't far behind and will undoubtedly be among the best of 2020.

Carey Mulligan deserves to be in the Best Actress conversation this coming awards season and does some really exceptional work outside of the period pieces we’re  accustomed to seeing her in. This movie also has a pretty fantastic soundtrack and one musical sequence in particular, is epic in every facet. Again, this movie isn't perfect, it has a few things that could be tweaked here and there, but the overall experience is really phenomenal. It's closer to being a 10 than an 8, but I can't quite give it a perfect 10 critic score. But general audiences will still have a blast with this film as well, I'm giving it an 8 of 10 for general audiences. It can lag as was mentioned and some may get bored at times, but the third act is as solid as one comes.

All in all, Promising Young Woman is a movie all should make an effort to watch as soon as it becomes available to you via streaming or otherwise. It's a fantastic piece of filmmaking that has so much going for it. So much promise.
