Son Of Saul - Movie Review

Son Of Saul - Movie Review

Critic Score - 9 of 10

General Audience Score - 7 of 10

A truly epic movie that doesn't just tell a World War 2 story, the somewhat first person perspective the camera occupies through almost the entirety of the film helps one view the events surrounding an individuals experiences during the war. The movie won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film with good reason, it really is a fantastic piece of filmmaking that may not live up to the scope of The Pianist or Schindler's List as a epic holocaust film, but it comes close.

Son of Saul is a real gem of a film that many will never get the pleasure of experiencing, simply because of the reservations many have as the film is subtitled and with the dialogue almost completely in Hungarian, reading is a requirement. As such this movie will appeal to many mainstream cinephiles and movie critics and will get very little attention from almost all others. Many of the films technical aspects, production design, costumes, camera work and screenplay leave very little to be desired in way of what you'd expect from a solid filmmaking.

But some less than hardcore viewers may not be as interested in what the film is doing with techs and subtitles will probably still be generally interested in the character, the main story, visuals and overall plot. And with the topics being covered it will be easy for many to be captured and even riveted with the things taking place on screen. Simply put, Son of Saul is an incredible work of art that has been captured on film and needs to be watched by all. It is breathtaking, excruciating, astounding, heartbreaking, inspiring and captivating. All these adjectives come together is a magnificent way on screen.

I would give this movie a 10 of 10 for a critic score but ended up at a 9. The camera work did get a bit frustrating at times for me, I wanted to see more of what was happening and the film forces one to focus on the main character and not much else at times. And this movie is not perfect, but it is excellent and should be watched as an important piece of history. The general moviegoer may enjoy it as well but not get what the fuss is all about, so I'm also giving it a 7 of 10 for mainstream film watchers.

Thanks for reading my thought on Son Of Saul.
