Wonder Woman 1984 - Movie Review

Critic Score - 5 of 10

General Audience Score - 7 of 10

Wonder Woman 1984 or WW84 is the sequel to the 2017 Wonder Woman movie, however, as I can recall very little of the original movie, the sequel works very well as stand alone film for those not familiar with the franchise or the other DC movies. The latest installment of the DC superhero movies does little to either elevate or degradate the DC universe. It works perfectly well if not taken very seriously, it can be an amusing and even, I dare say, vaguely entertaining movie, when its working at its best.

Many people just looking for a good time at the theaters, or in this day and age, in their homes, will be perfectly satisfied queueing this film up and watching with family and friends as most anyone will find some amount of entertainment in this movie, created almost entirely with the masses in mind. This movie has the look and feel of the mainstream summer blockbuster, which was what it was originally aimed to become, Covid-19 had other plans.

As an action, superhero, blockbuster movie, this works as a perfectly adequate entry into the DC world, but really pales when held up against most of the Marvel films being produced. The characters, both bad and good, have very little depth to them and it's difficult to get invested in much of anything they're doing, or feel many of the emotional beats the movie is shooting for. The plot moves along steadily enough but the dialogue and overall story leaves quite a bit to be desired as well as several annoying plot holes and story inconsistencies that will frustrate those that may be watching for them.

Overall most will find a good degree of entertainment in what this film is, but anyone digging much deeper than surface level will ultimately come away neutral, if not dissatisfied with what they just watched. Take it for what it is, don't expect too much and you may just enjoy a very modern feeling film set in 1984.

Thank you for reading my thoughts on Wonder Woman 1984.
