I Care A Lot - Movie Review
I Care A Lot - Movie Review
Critic Score - 8 of 10
General Audience Score - 9 of 10
What can be said about I Care A Lot? It's based on a true story. Nope, not that. But like that, this film is filled with misdirection, twists and turns galore. But will you care a lot about it?
PROS - Rosamund Pike plays Marla Grayson who is a con artist of sorts. This performance is the single best thing this movie has going for it, but certainly not the only thing. Pike is fantastic in the role and has already received much praise from critics groups. The odd thing about this performance, one of the finest of the year, is that we, the audience, are actively rooting against this anti-hero, almost from the very start. She's ruthless, brilliant and cunning and without getting into spoilers, we almost revel is seeing her wicked deeds but then also getting her comeuppance.
It's a fair delight as we watch Marla go about her business, learn about her work and get to watch the trouble she brings upon herself and her friends. The screenwriting and dialogue is excellent, as well as the pacing, the film progresses nicely and I can't imagine anyone getting bored by this film. It's easy to watch Marla as the story keeps on rolling, twists and turns keep the audience right there to the end, we need to find out where it all goes. The music and score is well constructed, the tempo picks up and amp up the anxiety and pressure of the situations Marla finds herself in. With all that is this bound to be among the years best films?
CONS - There aren't many things to take issue with in this film on the technical side, but the story itself is fairly shallow. It's entertainment value is through the roof but leaves you with nothing in the end. No takeaway, no lessons, nothing under the surface. Maybe don't be bad. And while that's fine for some, a quick bit of fun, others will be looking for more in a film.
SUMMARY - All in all most people will have a blast and enjoy the trip this movie takes you on. But that's all it is, just like a rollercoaster, you'll get on, enjoy the ride, get off and go about your business. I doubt this film will go down in history as a great film, so take it for what it is. You'll care a lot about this movie while you watch it and forget it the moment it's over.
