Lamb - Movie Review

Lamb - Movie Review Critics Score - 8 of 10 General Audience Score - 6 of 10 A24 is a film production and distribution company that makes great smaller films, they also acquire distribution rights to some fantastic foreign films so lovers of cinema here in the U.S. can can go crazy over them. They’ve brought us a slew of truly wonderful movies over the almost ten years they’ve been in existence, including the Best Picture winner of 2016, Moonlight. The latest film they’ve brought to theatres a couple weeks ago is a foreign film from Iceland called Lamb. If you haven’t watched the trailer for this film yet, don’t, it has the biggest impact on those that know the least about it. I’ll not only steer clear of spoilers but stay as vague as possible. It’s a wild ride, like most A24 films, and although it’s not the greatest movie of the year, it’s fascinating, it’s weird and when held up against most other new releases, proves to be a lion of a film amongst Lambs. SYNOPSIS - This story of wha...

Old - Movie Review

Old - Movie Review Critics Score - 6 of 10 General Audience Score - 6 of 10 M. Night Shyamalan broke onto the scene in 1999 with his feature film The Sixth Sense and quickly became the heralded “Hitchcock” of our generation after he followed that up with Unbreakable, Signs and The Village. But after it became clear that M. Night was perfectly capable of directing some, let’s just politely say not great films, and that The Sixth Sense was about the best of what he had to offer, he’s struggled to return to form and his films of late have been met with mixed results. Old is his latest attempt to recapture some of his former greatness and it follows his typical pattern of starting out with an intriguing premise with potential to be a fun mystery with a great twist ending. But the execution and the final plot twist just don’t stick the landing like his movies used to. This film is still relatively high in overall entertainment value, even at an hour and forty-five minutes, but most of M. Ni...

Dune - Movie Review

Dune - Movie Review Critics Score - 9 of 10 General Audience Score - 9 of 10 Back in 1965 a book was written that has been heralded as one of the greatest inspirational books of all time and one of the world’s best-selling science fiction novels, a little piece of work by Frank Herbert called Dune. This book has captured the imaginations of people throughout the decades but has proved notoriously difficult to convert into film, with a couple attempts resulting in one failed attempt and one 1984 David Lynch film that garnered mixed reception. In steps Denis Villeneuve, the director who brought the aliens to us in Best Picture nominated The Arrival and then took us to the edge of the future in Blade Runner 2049, now to try his hand at converting these words on paper into film on screen. This time thanks to the computer technology that exists and the massive budget bestowed upon the film from the Warner Brothers studio, we have a piece of cinema that is nothing short of a landmark in film...

There’s Someone Inside Your House - Movie Review

There’s Someone Inside Your House - Movie Review Critics Score - 2 of 10 General Audience Score - 4 of 10 Every season we get a few movies that fall into the standard genres, in October we get some scary and creepy films and in the thanksgiving/Christmas season we usually get some heartwarming family dramas. This season doesn't disappoint, we've already gotten Halloween Kills, next week Last Night In Soho and Antlers drop into theatres, then King Richard comes out right before thanksgiving. But Netflix needed to have a season friendly movie and so a couple weeks back we got There's Someone Inside Your House, hereafter referred to as TSIYH, a film that the Producers of Stranger Things and The Conjuring threw together so they could have a slasher movie to drop in time for Halloween. This film is short and paced fairly well at just over an hour and a half, but trying to find many more positive points about it to discuss will be quite the challenge. Make it your aim to steer cl...

The Humans - Movie Review

The Humans - Movie Review Critics Score - 9 of 10 General Audience Score - 8 of 10 Turning a Broadway play into a film is a very curious undertaking, each medium has advantages and disadvantages for conveying different aspects of basically the same story. We’ve been spoiled of late with some fantastic plays converted into some fantastic films, like Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and The Father from last year offering us some of the best performances by a lead actor. This year we get the privilege of seeing The Humans, the film version of a six year old, Tony award winning play by the same name from Stephen Karan who also directs the movie. It’s very contained like many play adaptations can be, but also highly entertaining as it blurs the edges of what genre it wants to land in, whether comedy, drama or even thriller. At a little over an hour and forty-five minutes, the film keeps us on our toes the entire runtime as it builds up terrific momentum and tension for the duration. But come in, pu...

Identifying Features - Movie Review

Identifying Features - Movie Review Critics Score - 8 of 10 General Audience Score - 5 of 10 Some of us have been to Mexico or Latin American, usually on vacation or a getaway, we see the best and most beautiful things these countries have to offer without the inconvenience of extreme poverty, crime, rape and sex trafficking. When you get past the resort facade of some of the popular tourist locations, you can get glimpses into the dark side of what life is like in many of these countries for many people that didn’t have the luxury of being born in the right areas of this planet. A new Spanish language film from earlier this year, Identifying Features, comes out of Mexico and will hopefully get submitted and a nomination for Best International Feature Film at the Oscars. It takes us on a journey into the more rural and wild parts of Mexico where they still lack electricity, but many of these areas are as beautiful as they are dangerous. If you’re a person who doesn’t need A list actors...

The Guilty - Movie Review

Image
The Guilty - Movie Review Critics Score - 8 of 10 General Audience Score - 8 of 10 The anxiety inducing lifestyle that police lead, the life threatening, homicidal maniac chasing, detective work sleuthing, constantly putting themselves in harm’s way is what make police dramas about as common a film premise as they come. What’s not so common is the contained police film, as they usually involve a bunch of running around to interview witnesses, general crime solving work or the action packed, gun pulling and suspect chasing more dangerous aspects of the job. The new Jake Gyllenhaal film to debut on Netflix, The Guilty, is an almost duplicate remake of a fantastic Danish language firm of the same name from 2018. But the film is able to do so much with so little, the pace and momentum of the hour and a half movie is incredible, despite everything we see in the film taking place in just a couple rooms inside a 911 emergency response call center. Even if the film isn’t completely original, o...

The Card Counter - Movie Review

Image
The Card Counter - Movie Review Critics Score - 6 of 10 General Audience Score - 5 of 10 The man responsible for writing some of cinema's greatest films including Raging Bull and Taxi Driver, Paul Schrader, is still at it, writing and producing film at a high level. His film from a few years ago, First Reformed, should've gotten Ethan Hawke an Oscar Nomination and it's nomination for Best Original Screenplay was incredibly well deserved. The latest from Paul, The Card Counter, just dropped into theaters a few weeks ago and this film is a very interesting dive into the life of a gambler, with surprisingly little about gambling or actual card playing present in the movie. The film is patient and methodical, just like the person the film is tracking with and unfortunately, if you can’t manage to get on that same track, you’ll feel like you’re playing fifty-two card pickup for two hours until The Card Counter is done counting. SYNOPSIS - Our introduction to the wide world of bl...
